Deborah Bertola lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a graduate of  U.C. Berkeley where she received her Ph.D in philosophy. In 1997, she left a corporate career in strategic planning and became a full time painter.

She participates in private studies with Chester Arnold, Paul Bridenbaugh, Stanly Goldstein, Jeffrey Beauchamps and Randy Sexton.

Deborah works from her studio Sausalito, California, and also spends much time painting plein air.

Artists Statement

I have been a plein air painter for over twelve years, working primarily in Northern California and occasionally in Italy and Colorado. The immediacy of on-site painting is critical to my process. While continuing with traditional landscape subjects, in the last few years I have also explored the intersection between the natural world and the man-made world.

This has resulted in a series of works involving architectural subjects that evoke a certain history, and an ambiguity of time and place. I find these subjects extremely interesting intellectually, emotionally and artistically. The images reveal my intensive interest in light, and in the beauty and often mystery, found in unusual places. In this vein, I am currently working on a project that explores houseboat communities and other waterfront areas.

My works may be seen at the Industrial Center Building, 480 Gate 5 Road, Studio # 320, Sausalito, Ca. 415-381-5103

Here is a small sampling of my art work, and invite you to visit my web site to see my complete collection.
